Minister Singhal attends workshop of RC-19 at USTM

Staff Reporter, Guwahati, December 19: Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Ashok Singhal attended in the Valedictory Session of a National level mid-term workshop on “A Paradigm Shift towards Sustainable Water and Sanitation Management in Hill Cities of India'' organised by Research Committee-19 (RC-19) on Urban Studies of Indian Sociological Society at USTM near Khanapara today. In his valedictory address, minister Singhal said that the sustainable use of water resources and effective sanitation management in urban hilly areas poses distinct challenges and unique opportunities for innovation. He said that with increase in urbanisation, provision of basic municipal infrastructure such as water and sanitation is always at stake. However, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, over the past few years, India has witnessed an unprecedented momentum to tackle sanitation challenges and seen impressive achievements in making cities open defecation free under the Swachh Bharat Mission. The Minister said that in order to achieve outcomes of Sustainable Development Goal no. 6 of the United Nations which desires safe, equitable and sustainable sanitation for all, it’s the time for a paradigm shift in the sanitation approach moving from conventional to a technology driven one. The session was also attended by Dr B.K.Das, USTM, Ravindra Singh Sheoran, President, Panjab University Chandigarh Alumni Association (PUCAA) and Dr. Manoj Kumar Teotia, COnvenor, RC19 Urban Studies of Indian Sociological Society among others.
