Assam agitation leader Khanin Mahanta passes away

Staff Reporter, Bajali, December 8: A leader of the Assam Agitation, Khanin Mahanta passed away on Wednesday at Barpeta Medical College and Hospital (BMCH) at the age of 75. He was admitted to BMCH on Monday due to breathing issues. Mahanta was suffering from prolonged neurological diseases. Khanin Mahanta was a think tank of six year long Assam Agitation against Bangladeshi immigrants led by All Assam Students Union (AASU) and All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad (AAGSP). Signing the Assam Accord is the mark of the end of the historic agitation. During the whole agitation, Mahanta was actively involved. He was a true nationalist. He was one of the founders of Asom Gana Parishad. He was also Chairman of Assam Government Marketing Corporation Limited in 1985 and Chairman of Escort Bank in 1996. Khanin Mahanta was also a senior lawyer. He was involved with many social organizations. It is to be mentioned that Mahanta was born in 1947 at Barpeta, He is survived by wife Dr. Amiya Mahanta former Associate professor, BHB College, son Biplab Mahanta and two daughters Dr. Krabi Mahanta & Nirmali Mahanta.
