USTM organised awareness drive on Rhino conservation techniques

Staff Reporter, Guwahati, September 23: The Department of Zoology, School of Biological Sciences, University of Science and Technology Meghalaya has celebrated World Rhino Day- 2022 yesterday in association with the Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden, Guwahati. The theme of the celebration was, Five Rhino Species Forever. A field visit was organized with 68 students and three faculty members of USTM to the zoo with the aim of creating awareness for the present techniques of rhino conservation. The programme began with a lecture by Aswani Kumar, IFS, Divisional Forest Officer, Assam State Zoo Division about the issues of rhinos and present conservation needs and ongoing efforts in Assam. The students got an insight into the habitat, habitat, food and enclosures of the rhinos in the zoo by the head of animal keeper, Rajanikanta Deka. A painting and open quiz competition was also organized among the students and the general public present in the zoo to understand and emphasize on the knowledge of present conservational needs of rhinos.
