Eighteen Hands Maa Durga Idol is a point of attraction in Hojai

Staff Reporter, Hojai, September 27: Preparations for the celebration of Durga Puja in Hojai are in full swing. Members of various puja committee's are working overtime to finish work on pandals in time. While artisans are busy in giving final attractive touch to the idol of Maa Durga along with Ganesha, Laxmi,Saraswati and Kartikaye. Tent-house workers are busy in giving shape to massive theme-based welcome arches and light gates on the streets, lanes and by-lanes of the pandals.This year, Durga Puja celebrations will begin with Sasthi Puja on October 1 while immersion of the deities has been scheduled on October 5. In Hojai, Idol of Eighteen Hands Maa Durga has always been a special attraction for the devotees. Since the year 1967, Adarsha Durga Puja Samity has been organizing this Puja.This is their 55th Year. "We believe that, when Maa Durga slaughtered Mahishasura, She was in her eighteen hands gesture. So, We started worshiping Eighteen (18) hands Maa Durga Idol." told Pramod More, Convenor, Adarsha Durga Puja Samity to this Correspondent. "Here puja is done followings all the vedic rituals, earlier puja used to be organized near Ashok Guest House near railway station but since 2020 the puja is shifted here to Jugal Kishore Kedia Bhawan.", Pratap Kayal, Co-Convenor,Adarsha Durga Puja Samity. "This year Adarsha Durga Puja Committee is geared up to celebrate the festivity with more enthusiasm and joy, the Idol is made of special soil and more emphasis is given on decoration and management.", said Mohan More and Manoj Sarma, Co-Convenors, Adarsha Puja Samity. "As per mythology,it is believed that Goddess Durga was in eighteen hands posture when she slaughtered for the first time Mahishasura, but he with his power reshaped again, next Maa Durga killed him with sixteen hand posture but he reshaped once again, then finally Goddess Durga in her ten hands posture slaughtered the buffalo demon and as such generally ten hands Durga Idol is worshiped.", told an educationalist. This year Kediapuram Durga Puja committee celebrated its silver Jubilee with pomp and gaiety. There are many other Committees in Hojai where the preparation of Durga Puja are at final stage viz., Sarbajanik Durga Bari celebrating since 1935, Govind Ashram celebrating since the year 1940, Natun Bazar Durga Puja celebrating since the year 1947, Nabakalpa Durga Puja Committee, Marwari Durgotsab Samity,Ramkrishna Mission,Sahapatty,Govinda pally,Kali Bari,Krishna Nagar,Harijan Colony,Nepali Mandir. Notably, maximum Durga Puja Samiti here are working to create mass awareness on ill-effects of plastic, significance of plantation and no wastage of water and electricity through banners, tableaus. On the other hand, Hojai District Administration is fully prepared to organize the Durga Puja festival in the district smoothly.
