World elephant day observed at Sootea

Staff Reporter, Biswanath Chariali, August 12: August 12 is celebrated as World Elephant Day in every part of the world. Sootea is no exception to this. Biswanath Wildlife Division in collaboration with Sonitpur East Division of Forest had organized an awareness meeting to commemorate the World Elephant Day at Chabilal Upadhyaya Memorial High School near Biswanath-Panpur embankment today. The forest officials from the wild life division briefed on how to protect the wild elephants that come to residential areas in search of food. They also explained how to reduce man-elephant conflict. Arif Hossain, member of Aranyak, a local NGO displayed photographs of wild animals and conducted a quiz competition among school students. Kanak Boishya, DFO, Biswanath wildlife division and Arun Business, DFO, Sonitpur East Division of Forest graced the awareness programme and addressed the gathering. The awareness programme was attended by Soidur Rahman, managing director of Upatyaka, an Eco-friendly NGO along with the teachers and public of the area. A total of five forest guards were felicitated with a citation, memento and a gamocha in the meeting for their distinguished services towards wildlife protection. Notably, a vast area of South Sootea shares a boundary with the sixth addition of KNP (Kaziranga National Park). Many people had lost their lives due to wild elephant attacks. Similarly, many wild elephants died due to inhumane torture to the wild creature.
