NESAC conducted mock drill on earthquake preparedness with NDRF

Guwahati, Sept 24: In view of the entire North East Region in the high seismic zone, the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) and 1st Battalion National Disaster Response force (NDRF) jointly conducted a Mock exercise on earthquakes in  NESAC Umiam, Meghalaya. The session began on September 24. 1st Battalion NDRF rescuers team led by Sh. H P S Kandari Commandant took active participation and assisted in planning, coordination and played a leading role during the conduction of mock drill. The efficacy and readiness of the Response System during any catastrophe was checked and observed by Dr. S. P. Aggarwal Director NESAC with officers from Disaster Management, CISF Reinforcement team, Health department, Police and  Fire Services during this exercise. During the exercise, A scenario of Earthquake was simulated. The earthquake of magnitude 7.1 in the Meghalaya state was generated, due to the impact of the earthquake buildings of NESAC collapsed. Rescuers of the NDRF demonstrated various extrication methods like high rise rescue, victim stabilization, triage of victims etc observing the disaster site safety plan.  The SAR teams rescued the trapped/injured peoples using Search & Rescue techniques from the building and provided medical care by MFR Teams. During this occasion H P S Kandari Commandant said,  “The Mock Exercise would facilitate exercising the standard operating procedures of emergency services and evaluating their state of readiness to handle earthquake -like emergency situations. Most importantly, it is expected to enhance the awareness and preparedness among all stakeholders, including the vulnerable communities.” A de-briefing session was carried after the exercise in which the role of NDRF was appreciated for successfully conducting the joint mock drill. The exercise concluded with a note to organize more such exercises in future so that the effective response during an earthquake disaster could be carried out & save precious human lives.
