Mumbai: Two decades after it first charmed audiences, the iconic romantic comedy Hum Tum, starring Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji, is set to return to the big screen. The beloved film will re-release in theatres across India on May 16, marking 20 years since its original debut in 2004.
Directed by Kunal Kohli, Hum Tum captured hearts with its witty exploration of gender dynamics and the evolving relationship between its lead characters—Karan Kapoor, a cheeky cartoonist, and Rhea Prakash, a spirited woman he meets on a flight. What follows is a journey filled with chance encounters, emotional growth, and an unforgettable romance that unfolds over time.
The film was celebrated not only for its engaging narrative and heartfelt performances but also for its memorable music and humorous animated interludes. Saif Ali Khan’s portrayal of Karan won him the National Film Award for Best Actor, a performance that surprised many given the role was initially considered by stars like Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan, and Vivek Oberoi.
Speaking to IndianExpress.com last year, director Kunal Kohli recalled the casting hurdles, ultimately praising Saif’s unexpected but award-winning turn as the film's romantic lead.
Hum Tum is being re-released as part of PVR INOX’s "Timeless Cinema" initiative, a curated slate of classic films making a theatrical comeback in May. The move aims to celebrate nostalgic Bollywood favourites and offer newer audiences a chance to experience them in their original cinematic glory.
With its blend of humor, emotion, and timeless charm, Hum Tum is poised to captivate a fresh generation while rekindling fond memories for longtime fans.
