Staff Reporter, Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has appealed for the cancellation of all remaining Bihu functions scheduled from May 10 onward, effectively bringing the state’s month-long Rongali Bihu celebrations to a close amid growing national concern over escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. In a message shared on social media, Chief Minister Sarma thanked the people of Assam for their vibrant and heartfelt participation in the cultural festivities held across the state. “Over the past month, we have joyfully celebrated Bihu across Assam through numerous cultural events. I sincerely thank everyone for their participation and contributions,” he wrote. Sarma’s appeal comes in the wake of heightened tensions at the India-Pakistan border, following reports of explosions in Jammu on the night of May 8. The situation has sparked fear and uncertainty nationwide, prompting a wave of cautionary advisories from both central and state governments. “The time has now come to conclude this festive season,” Sarma added. “I humbly appeal that all remaining Bihu functions scheduled from 10th May onwards be kindly cancelled. Let us bring this vibrant celebration to a graceful close, with the same unity and spirit in which it was celebrated.” The Chief Minister also urged citizens to remain vigilant and not fall prey to misinformation circulating on social media. Referring to unverified reports of attacks in Jammu and Punjab, Sarma highlighted the central government’s clarification that such claims were fake and not backed by any official confirmation. “As India stands UNITED under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji, as responsible citizens let us REJECT fake news from vested interests, REPORT those trying to undermine our Armed Forces, COMPLY with official guidelines. Jai Hind,” Sarma stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter). The appeal marks a somber turning point in what is typically the most joyous season for Assam. While many citizens expressed disappointment over the premature conclusion of Bihu festivities, there has also been a widespread show of solidarity with national security efforts. Authorities continue to urge the public to remain calm, follow official channels for updates, and refrain from spreading unverified information.
